Those of Whiteside (s) Surname yDNA Project May 8, 2008 Welcome !
Welcome to the 7th year of the search to find genetic lineage of those of Whiteside surnames. The “Whiteside Family Association” is a four year reality. Please consider becoming a member of the WFA, Inc. For only $10 (per family) you can be a part of all this. The WFA, Inc. has sponsored a web site that includes many features including links to Internet web pages like this one to provide you with the most up to date material. Do your part in continuing to make that happen. My Thanks to those who are renewing/supporting members of the WFA. It makes all this work. The results below are for this project. They have also been adjusted to reflect the new values of analysis on the 19 and 464 loci. The number of participants in the project has increased with well over FIFTY Whiteside (s), Whitside, Whiteside, Whitsett and Whitsitt males joining this effort. Those who bear the surname (and variants) are indicative of those of Whiteside are coming forward to participate in a project that started with just two of the Whiteside surname in 2000.The results are giving new insights into early origins of the genetic tribes of Whiteside. Results from the samples below show how the project continues to grow. All identities are shown as I.D. # . The conclusions drawn from samples will be discussed via the yDNA message forum at the new Whiteside Family Association, Inc. web site.

What now is the difference between Whiteside, Whitesides, Whitside , Whitsitt and Whitsett ?
Absolutely none. Take note of matches to the first project Sample #357 . Samples come from a Whitesides (with the added S) as well as from a Whitside and others from a Whitsitt/Whitsett vs. Whiteside . This discovery would tend to indicate that name variations have little to do with final actual and genetic linkages. Facts not discovered through documents can sometimes lead to confusing and unrealistic differences. Of late we find those whose earliest immigrant grandfather came 100 years after earlier
cousins! Expectations are that we will see continued genetic matches to Whitsett and Whiteside(s), Whitside, Whitsitt and yet unexplored variations to the base surname. This along with much different times of migration is now the genetic reality. I could see Whitsed and others as a potential genetic match and continued matches with those who do not carry the Whiteside or variant surnames. The problem appears to have originated in the pronunciation of the name and the resultant phonetic spellings by ancient scribes with varying degrees of proficiency. We see samples from those whose surname has changed spelling multiple times throughout the ensuing generations for many reasons. I call it surname flip-flopping. Cousins who lack documentation linkages yet are cousins none the less through yDNA findings. Documents are almost impossible to link when the surname changes spelling. Sorta like the pea and shell game. Two males of the Whiteside/Crawford family group have seen the re-establishment of linkage to cousins who share the current “base” or “reference” profile. They are EXACT yet again there is no supporting documentation and a different migrant grandfather at a later time frame. Those of you who are wondering just where your immediate family fits into the picture of this larger and unknown (to you) family should seriously consider sampling in the project. For your own family you can give this gift of knowledge and become a part of something that can only happen with participation. Why not join with us ? What reasoning should prevent that? Establish this legacy of a much larger family that is your own.
To see how the 389-1 and -2 calculation is arrived at along with an explanation
Regardless of any speculations or previous
theories the samples above factored in with migratory patterns should prove to
be conclusive and scientific proof positive of actual genetic family linkages.
At present time I am of the view that in the main those of Whiteside were a
highly mobile (migratory) family whose origins may have been from the first
Britons or Celtic (Belga) traders who lived in a town north of present day

About the privacy Issue !!
Just as general information for those concerned about access to these samples and the privacy issue: These samples come from what is described as the 23rd string or “junk” yDNA (non recombining). In others words it contains NONE of the data that would indicate eye, hair color, or markers that would indicate genetic based diseases. Its application is mostly limited to identification in gender and genealogy. (Female string is X or mDNA Also note that more than three mismatches with a 12 marker analysis indicates no genetic match (not kindred). Developments of late has seen a revision/expansion of genetic groups and the numbering system. We now have R1b1 and R1b1c in the project.
About yDNA profiles !
I can’t make anyone’s numbers different than what is reported to me from the lab. Please understand that I would LOVE to see everyone match according to their expectations or research. It just doesn’t always happen this way and I am left to break the news and attempt an explanation. No science or technology is perfect including this one. There can be errors along with results that don’t match records. However I have seen many more “ right on” numbers than ones that I would question. Of late I have had those who would question this science and hold it to a lesser level than written records. Mainly I see this as motivated by unexpected numbers or ones that conflict with their opinions based on manuscripts or records. These profiles are what genealogists now use as citations or proof and most software now has a place for yDNA citations. Nothing wrong with questioning your numbers but try to avoid doing that with the science. The proof derived from it is useful to many who are not trained or accomplished genealogists. (ME !!) If nothing else it provides a genetic starting point for your document searches.

We can all find reasons NOT to participate but the simple fact is that neither this project, the WFA (along with its web site) can ever grow to its full potential or share newly made discoveries without your participation. We are talking about establishing KNOWN family groups and forever discarding previously held conclusions that could be incorrect. Currently a senior historian of the WFA is working along with others in helping establish contemporary family to their documented family group. When you see a participant number above you are seeing one representative of a documented/charted family group. Think about how many members there are of his immediate family and then you will know just how many people are involved through this sole participant. Those who may have thought they were but one (sometimes small) immediate documented family are now able to know those who have been lost through the generation.
Establish and record the genealogical identity of your family group. Join with those others of your long lost kindred! Take a few minutes to scrub a sample from the inside of your cheek and pay $99 (US) to have it analyzed. A small price to make a big mark.
To Bob Whitside and his Son, Chris: What can I say ? These cousins have come forward to lend their skills and expertise in an invaluable family effort. What a “driving force” and a “go to” guy our Bob ! He had created and maintained the web address and page of the WFA, Inc. along with serving as a director. Now his Son Chris is with us. This site is (as of 10/07) a new and more capable one. In time added data files will become available via the WFA online Whiteside library !
